My grandma was one of the founding members of St. Dimitria Macedonian Orthodox Church in New York. She created a place where those from Macedonia or with Macedonian heritage could come together and celebrate. Not only did it serve as a place for people to come together, but my grandma also helped provide support and resources to those coming from Macedonia and needing help to adjust to America.
Ana was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and leader in the community. She loved her children and us grandchildren and would give us "the shirt off her back" if any of us asked. She was witty, smart, and full of perseverance and love.
With just a high school diploma, Ana broke social norms in the '80s and became a working mother. She began in a secretary position at Pitcher Matthews Insurance Company. Over the course of more than 35 years, Ana moved up to become the Vice-President of Sales at Sedgwick James Insurance Company. It is inspiring as her granddaughter to see this work ethic and the destruction of social norms and odds.
Ana, or "Baba" as the grandkids call her, was the biggest caretaker in anyone and everyone's life. It did not matter who you were or where you came from. If you ever needed any help, our Baba would help you instantly. So, when it came time to help her, my dad rallied our family and we supported her through her fight with Alzheimer's. After a few months, it was evident Baba needed to be in assisted living care. After many discussions and some heartache, we brought her here to Needham to be close to us so we could love and care for her. Even as her memory began to fade, her love and spirit were still so prevalent.
It has now been a little over nine months since Baba's fight with Alzheimer's ended. We miss her each day, but her legacy is so unbelievably strong. She has brought so much pride to the Galovski family name, and we honor her when we take risks, when we care for each other and others and when we chose to lead with kindness. She was a huge traveler, and I'll always hold her sense of adventure and bravery in my heart as I go forward in life. Throughout her unbelievable life, filled with trial and error, she always found love in her heart and carried herself with dignity and grace. I can never live up to the woman she was, but I will always try my best. We miss and love her, but her spirit and lessons are close to our hearts.
