Installing a sensory area can be a great way of creating a special space in any school. A multi sensory environment can help so many different types of learners, whether they are challenged with identified learning differences, or may just need an opportunity to cool down and cope with daily situations that can arise at school or elsewhere.
Multi sensory spaces can help children develop their hand-eye coordination, communication skills, fine motor skills as well as gross motor skills. They help meet the unique learning needs of neurodivergent children to meet standard learning outcomes.
For fine motor, it can become really tricky to change a child’s pencil grasp after the age of seven. This is unless THEY are very motivated to do so. So, it can be critical for early intervention. To practice fine motor skills, not only does the hand need to be ready, but the core of the body as well, that’s why it’s important for kids to be doing motor activities to strengthen, move and activate the body, and have multi sensory experiences that stimulate the nervous system such as touch, smell, and visual cues.
Facilitated by Ms. Fabri, along with the CASTEL team members, teachers can schedule NDV students to attend, either in small groups or individually, for fine motor practice, any issues with tactile defensiveness, letter formation, cursive help, or general sensory motor practice.
