During my freshman year, Women's Chorale participated in a Global Classroom exchange with the women's choir at our sister school San Silvestre from Lima, Peru. The exchange was virtual and each choir recorded a song ahead of time to share with the group.
The San Silvestre Choir performed their rendition of "A Mi Palomita", a Spanish traditional lullaby made famous by numerous Latin folk groups.
Our choir performed "Make Them Hear You" from the musical Ragtime, an inspirational piece that captures American life both past and present.
After sharing the performances and expressing our thoughts, we all discussed the importance of music in our cultures, as well as the differences in characteristics of traditional Latin/Peruvian music and American music.
Malvern Preparatory School hosts an annual scholarship speaker for their CSItizen Speaker Series. In 2021, their scholarship speaker was Wes Moore, who attended school in Valley Forge and is best known for his creative autobiography The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates.
At the event, Moore spoke about his time in Pennsylvania and the influence that the area had on his childhood. He also discussed his book and career, as well as the effect that his identity as an African American man had on his success. Moore reflected on his time in the United States Army, and gave the audience advice on how to become honorable and successful individuals.
