Every year HES (Hispanic Engineers and Scientists) partners with the other engineering clubs to serve underprivileged youth from our very own South Bend! This year HES brought over 60 middle school students from Navarre Intermediate Center. We provided presentations and demonstrations of cool STEM projects to get them excited about the field of STEM.
Our STEM project was gumdrop construction, where we had our young students pair up and try to design the strongest structure out of a limited supply of resources. Quickly, they found out triangles are the strongest supporting structure and we showed them examples of triangular trusses used in iconic places around the world... designed by engineers!
