Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Sustainable City pLAn includes a goal to develop a City Biodiversity Strategy in 2017. This process will include working with an Expert Council to identify indices to measure biodiversity and develop a baseline LA Biodiversity Index. Following the index, and working with stakeholders, the Mayor’s Office and city departments will recommend policies and practices to protect and enhance biodiversity throughout the region.

They allow local jurisdictions to maintain land use control and development flexibility by planning a regional preserve system that can meet future public and private mitigation needs. The preserve system will maintain biodiversity and ecosystem health in the region, while maintaining quality of life and economic growth. These plans were developed cooperatively by local jurisdictions and special districts with the goal of conserving native vegetation communities and associated species, rather than focusing preservation efforts on one species at a time.

The program focuses land acquisition along watersheds with other values in mind: known high-quality habitats and communities, connectivity, and our sense of place. The program has partnered with local municipalities, the state and local land trusts toward our goal of conserving 30% of the County’s total land area.
