Dong-Jae Yi, The Designer
Ph.D. Candidate in Design; MLA in Landscape Architecture
Dong-Jae drew inspiration from the Park Shops building on campus when creating his design, Sol-Arbor, for the SolarSpace design competition.
"The campus with an industrial heritage tells the history of our past, the students and neighbors on campus tell the story of our present."
Dong-Jae also considered the education and display of the solar panels when creating his design, ensuring it was intuitive.
"I thought it is difficult to observe with the eyes because the reusable energy or solar energy is usually located high or on the roof... I decided to expose the electrical circuit. I assumed it would be easier to understand than looking at educational signage if the circuit can be shown as a structure and pattern. The shape of the circuit can be well-matched with industrial heritage, brick patterns, and steel beams, and the program in it also provides a space for constructive communication and study."
