The design competition was an opportunity for students in architecture and design disciplines to gain valuable real world experience through the design process in an environment outside the classroom. The selected student had the opportunity to see the design through to the completion of construction, including a voice in the revision and finalization process.
The challenge was to help shape NC State’s sustainable future through reimagining the existing Gardner Arboretum trellis! We asked designers to envision a space that meets our vision of a multifunctional place for the NC State campus community and visitors alike to enjoy.

SolarSpace is inherently sustainable, from start to finish. The project started with the repurposing of an existing trellis at Gardner Arboretum (see photos below) as well as the use of older solar panels that were previously in storage.
The custom work table was made from fallen oak trees from campus. The wood from the original structure has been saved for the use of future Shack-a-thons.
