Choice boards are a new learning tool being used in the classroom.
They involve greater student autonomy in the classroom because students can pick a handful of activities that are meaningful to them. When students feel control over their learning they tend to be more engaged because they chose activities that they want to do.
Choice boards can be appealing to students because they can choose activities that cater to their "learning style".
💡Remember students can identify with more than one learning style. It is not a scientifically proven way of categorizing students but are helpful for general categories of activities.
In ECI 201, in groups, we put on our teacher hats and created our choice boards based on books of our choice. My group and I decided to base our choice board on the graphic novel Drama by Raina Telgemeir. This assignment made me realize how to make a choice board that is functional and fun you need to put a lot of thought into two things:
How will the activity will enhance the students learning?
Are the directions clear enough that any student could easily follow them?
One requirement of this assignment was that the activities we created covered different subject areas. I think that the greatest way to enhance a student's learning is by connecting media across subject areas because it makes students think outside the box. Even though this choice board revolves around a graphic novel it is interesting to try to connect STEM-based lessons
❓We have activities that connect to social studies, English/writing, math, science, design, and technology. Can you identify which is which? Shhh I'll tell you...click here.
We wanted to make sure that students had different ways than traditional worksheets to show their learning. Some ways we incorporated different modes of learning were creating videos, inserting images into assignments, and creating physical creations.
These different modes are important because students learn in different ways! What works well for one student might not resonate with another. So giving the students the option to draw, create videos, or do math problems can play to different strengths.
All of these activities involve more than just the novel to complete it fully. For example, the Theather Scavenger hunt involves students taking a deep dive into theater history and learning more about Shakespeare.
We had to ensure that our choice board was easy for students to navigate. This meant first having clear directions on what activities they had to do to receive credit. Because our board has six activities in total students have to complete three. It also meant that all of our 💡hyperlinks needed to be "clickable" with appropriate access for all students.
The first slide of our choice board has directions for the expectations of the assignment.
Click around our board! There is navigation to each activity, returning to the choices, and a slide for studnets to turn in their work.
💡 What is a hyperlink?
A hyperlink is when a link is "hidden" within the words on a page or an image. Usually, a hyperlink will be identifiable because the words that are linked will be underlined or blue. They allow you to put links on your page without pasting the entire URL.
