TMS 211 is a course designed to introduce students to fiber formation and physical properties of various fiber types. I taught one session of the lab component to this course which involved teaching students how to use an optical microscope to characterize different textile fibers. Throughout the semester, we had labs regarding preparing longitudinal and cross-sectional mounts, looking at fibers through polarized light, utilizing Image J software for fiber measurements and calculations, observing animal hair fibers, and how Raman spectroscopy can be used to identify specific fiber types. There were two big projects in this lab: 1) creating a fiber library where each student was assigned a textile fiber to characterize and make a presentation to share with the class; and 2) identifying an unknown blend of fibers by utilizing the skills learned throughout the semester. My role was to prepare and teach the material to the students, provide help when needed, and grade lab assignments throughout the semester.
