Environmental DNA (eDNA) Project explores the potential of biologic material dropped or left behind in the environment.
Observations from Cliff Barackman of a noticible trackway whose soil in and around the track was taken, sampled, and sequenced to find signficant potential eDNA.
Another potential trackway, this one a little less obvious, being measured and observed prior to soil collection for lab testing.
Darby Orcutt and Dr. Carlos Goller in the metagenomics lab.
Darby Orcutt and his NC State colleague Dr. Carlos Goller have partnered with Cliff Barackman, of Animal Planet’s Finding Bigfoot, to gather samples from in and around apparent tracks found in Oregon. In 2024, the team examined these samples as a part of training students as part of Dr. Goller's metagenomics course, and in 2025, the team are not only continuing this work with more samples, but also exploring other frontiers of eDNA research.
