The first step to becoming an active 4-H member or volunteer during this year’s 4-H program is to enroll. North Carolina 4-H uses an online system, called 4-HOnline 2.0, to manage 4-H memberships, clubs, projects, activities, and communications.
All members who participate in North Carolina 4-H must have a 4-HOnline 2.0 profile.
Use the family guides below for step-by-step instructions on how to enroll.
Please review the types of 4-H members before you re-enroll or enroll for the first time.
Types of Members:
Youth Members are automatically entered as either a Cloverbud or a Member based on their date of birth.
Cloverbuds are youth ages 5 - 7 years of age (as of Jan. 1 of each year).
Members are youth ages 8 - 18 years of age (as of Jan. 1 and not have passed their 18th birthday on Jan. 1 of the year they are participating).
Volunteers are adults who have been / or will be / screened and certified as 4-H volunteers. There are two mains types of volunteers:
Level 1 Volunteers: Level 1 volunteers work closely with, interact, supervise, instruct, or otherwise come into direct, non-incidental contact with Minors in a Program/Activity/Event. Level 1 volunteers are required to submit three references, have a background screening done once every three years (NC State University manages the screening process at NO cost to the volunteer applicant), and complete the Minor's Regulation Training video annually ("North Carolina 4-H Volunteer Guidebook").
Level 2 Volunteers: Level 2 volunteers work with Extension youth programs in roles that are not linked directly with youth or have limited / supervised youth interaction. A Level 2 volunteer serves in an indirect youth service role, for example, project record/ presentation/ livestock judges, event greeters, etc. Level 2 volunteers are only allowed to serve in roles where they could have direct youth interaction if they are supervised by an Extension employee and / or a Level 1 volunteer. Level 2 volunteers complete the Minor's Regulation Training video annually; however, they do not complete the background screening process or submit references ("North Carolina 4-H Volunteer Guidebook").
*Note: Any adult or guardian that desires to work directly with members in any capacity, such as helping with club activities, should enroll as a Volunteer*
