Experienced STEM professionals interested in supporting the next generation of STEM leaders can apply to become mentors.
The time commitment varies but typically involves a few hours per month for mentoring activities and program engagement. Mentors should be prepared for their meetings and need to meet together before meeting with their groups. There is also a mandatory 2-3 hour training (including protection of minors attestation).
Time breakdown:
90 minute meetings- twice/month
15-30 minute prep meeting with co-mentor(s)-twice/month
2.5 hour training- once during September or October
30 minutes- 1 hour group support/check in- as needed
Mentors should have a strong background in a STEM field, relevant experience, and a passion for sharing knowledge and supporting mentees. Mentors will be vetted, trained, and fully supported by our program director.

Mentors receive training and access to resources to help them effectively guide and mentor their mentees. Mentors should also reach out to the program director with any questions or concerns.
Mentor-mentee matches are made based on our team matching form. We match mentors first and those mentor teams create team names and descriptions. From there, mentees choose which teams they are interested in based on topic and availability. We try to match mentees to one of their top 3 choices.
Mentors play a crucial role in helping mentees develop skills, gain confidence, and explore STEM career paths.
You can reach out to our program director by emailing explore@ncssm.edu to ask any additional questions that you may have.
The program is provided at no cost to participants. We aim to provide access to STEM mentoring without financial barriers.
