FAQs
Open to North Carolina High School students (grades 10-11) in congressional districts 1, 3, and 11 (see map on main page) interested in exploring various careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and related fields. Previous Step Up to STEM and INSPIRE students in grades 10-11 are also welcome to apply. This program is not open to current NCSSM Residential or NCSSM Online Students.
As a mentee, you'll have the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals, gain valuable insights into STEM careers, develop your skills, and build a supportive network.
The program typically runs for a semester and the time commitment will be every other week for 1.5 hours per meeting via zoom. We want students who can commit to this program and not miss meetings because of other commitments. We want students who are engaged in the community, but this program should be given proper consideration in their schedule.
Mentors and mentees are matched based on schedule and interests using our Team Matching Form. It is important for accepted students to complete this form as soon as they receive it.
Ideally, we are not looking for the student who has it all figured out and has participated in every available activity in their area. We are looking for students who may need additional resources to explore and have the enthusiasm and curiosity to seek additional information. We understand that there are barriers to students being able to participate in activities. We would love to work with the students who may face barriers. Students with a deep knowledge of STEM may participate but they must respect students without experience in STEM.
Ultimately, we want students who are committed to learning more about the opportunities available for their future.
Applications will open in Fall 2025
If the student has grades below a C average or failing grades without an extenuating circumstance, the student may not participate in the program for that semester. If the student has strong recommendations against their participation from the school evaluation form, additional questions may be asked and could result in disqualification.
We are currently working with students from congressional districts 1 ,3, and 11 and previous Step Up to STEM and INSPIRE students in grades 10-11. Please check to see if you are in one of these congressional districts.
This program is not open to NCSSM Residential or NCSSM Online Students.
