Students who apply by May 15th will be informed if they are accepted, waitlisted, or denied from the trip no later than May 25th.
Students who apply after May 15th will receive decisions on a rolling basis.
We will only issue denials to students whom we have concerns about traveling safely and making positive decisions while abroad, which will be very few students! Waitlisted students will be offered spots as they become available.
Ideally, students will inform us of their decision as soon as possible after receiving their offer - this will help us to keep our waitlisted students in the loop! Final decisions must be made by May 29th. If a student is offered a spot after being waitlisted, we will let them know what their decision deadline is.
We have room for 18 students on this trip. This allows us to maintain a 6:1 ratio with chaperones.
From the application submitted by the student, we will consider the student's interest in the trip. We will also reach out to their CC and selected references to get a sense of their ability to travel well and make safe decisions abroad. This recommendation combined with their interest will help us to make our initial offers! We will also review a student's conduct history to confirm there are no alarming violations that raise questions about their ability to travel abroad.
We will make offers to 18 students initially, but we will continue to make offers to waitlisted students as needed until all 18 spots are filled!
J-Term is comprised of two two-week sessions. All travel happens during the second session of J-Term. Our course will span all four weeks; we will be in the classroom together for the first two weeks of J-Term preparing for our trip together! During this time, we will watch films, do research on Japanese culture, visit nearby Japanese gardens, learn etiquette for visiting temples and shrines, learn basic Japanese phrases, and more.
Unfortunately, no. Participation in all four weeks is required by Academic Programs.
We will have housing available to you on the Durham campus for the first two week session and for any dates before/after our trip that you are in Durham! Our trip will depart from and return to the NCSSM-Durham campus.
The $300 non-refundable deposit is due to All Japan Tours upon accepting an offer to travel on this trip.
The remaining balance of $3,130 is due to AJT in installments. Flight cost (~$1900) will have a separate due date.
SCSSI Funds are also due in installments.
Final payment schedule is still being created and will be available soon!
Academic Programs has a VERY limited number of scholarships available for students traveling. We recommend all students apply! You can find more information in communications from Academic Programs. Applications are due May 20th and decisions will be sent out May 27th.
Please note that scholarship priority is given to Seniors with demonstrated financial need.
Yes! You will receive daily updates from the chaperone team on what we do in Japan. Look out for emails from us with plenty of pictures!
If you need to contact chaperones, we will also be available for you to reach out to us. Just remember the time difference!
We recommend you purchase an international phone plan or eSIM card for your student so they do not receive roaming charges and are still able to contact you and sponsors while in Japan! Many phone plans have international plans available, reach out to your provider for more information.
If your student needs to go to urgent care or the emergency room, a chaperone will stay with your student at all times and keep you informed of the situation.
Minor violations will not prevent your student from traveling.
Major violations may prevent your student from traveling. The Community Conduct Board might recommend inability to travel on J-Term as a sanction, or we might determine that we don't have the ability to keep your student safe while traveling.
If your student has a minor conduct issue abroad, we will handle it as we do minor violations on campus and keep you informed. This might mean your student has restricted privileges for the remainder of the trip (must stay with chaperones during free time, etc).
If your student has a major conduct issue abroad, you will be required to travel to Japan at your own expense to bring them back to the U.S.
Yes! We will learn basic phrases together, but we will have a full-time Japanese tour guide who speaks English working with us!
You may contact any of the three sponsors, but Kori Willoughby is our designated student/parent contact point!
