The Who, What, Where, When, & Why
of Your Senior Year.
NNHS graduation requirements depend on your Course of Study, and local requirements usually go beyond the state minimum requirement. For most students, 28 units of credit are required. The following chart from the NC Department of Instruction clearly identifies which courses are required. The total, however, does not include any additional electives required by our school system. Transfer students may have different requirements with regard to electives if they came from a school where less courses are taught per year.

FRC is Future Ready Core Course of Study, and OCS is Occupational Course of Study.
Grade Point Average
GPA is calculated officially through Powerschool, but there are tools on the web that can be used to estimate how you are doing with GPA. One estimator/calculator is at http://gpacalculator.net/high-school-gpa-calculator/GPA estimator/calculatior. You can plug in your grades and get an estimate. Please see or email your Counselor for GPA as calculated in Powerschool.

Questions? Contact your Counselor...WHO IS MY COUNSELOR? (Assigned by student’s last name)
Please print off and give form to your recommenders (Give them at least 2 weeks to complete you recommendation). Link
Submitting Transcripts
The best and easiest way to send your transcript is electronically through www.cfnc.org. This method will also allow you to track when your transcript is requested and when it was sent. This will also send your transcript in summer after you graduate. You can also see the transcript after it is sent, right there on your cfnc.org account!
For out of state colleges apply through the Common Application https://www.commonapp.org/ if possible and your Counselor sends the transcript through their part of the Common App, or, paper copies can be sent by completing a Transcript Request Form and returning it to Mrs. Engelking in Student Services.
SAT/ACT scores are not on your transcript. You MUST send those scores yourself through www.collegeboard.org (SAT) and www.actstudent.org (ACT) if you wish to send them. Due to the Pandemic, many colleges are not requiring test scores for students applying for college up to the fall 2024 application cycle. Check into each of your college's application requirements.
Recommendation Letters
Request in advance – give at least two weeks notice
Recommendation letters can come from teachers, coaches, counselors, employers, community members etc.
Check the application to see who they want a recommendation letter from- if you are using the Common App, you will need to provide the recommender's name and email address in your application process.
Choose someone who knows you really well and who you can count on to get you the recommendation letter by the deadline
It is helpful to give the person writing your recommendation letter a student resume so they know as much about you as possible and can incorporate your achievements into their recommendation letter. There are many styles of activity sheets, perhaps look through the ones on this site: Senior Activity Sheet Styles - Seniors should complete something like the examples and give it to the counselor/teacher who is writing their recommendation letter. This form should be provided to the recommender at least 2 weeks prior to the recommendation deadline.
Scholarship Applications are an ongoing process
You have to apply -Scholarships do not just come to you!
You will need to do the leg work to find scholarships that match you. Your counselor can provide sites and direction but ultimately, it is up to you and your parent/guardian.
Where can I find scholarships?
School Website-Go to Counseling Page, then click on the Scholarships and Opportunities Page.
Directly on college and university websites
CFNC.org
Fastweb.org
Outside organizations: Church, Employers, Civic Organizations
Scholarships do not have to be paid back and can be need based or merit based.
If you plan to play sports in college, you must register with the NCAA Eligibility Center

$100 registration fee, but if you have received an SAT/ACT fee waiver, you can qualify for a NCAA fee waiver as well. (Please see your assigned counselor).
It is the Student's responsibility to ensure they have met all eligibility requirements. Work with your coach on this. It is important to do your very best in your classes and make the highest grades you can.
Please contact Ms. McClain in Student Services if you have any questions.
The Class of 2025 can purchase their Cap and Gown through Herff Jones.
