NCPS Digital Learning Standards courses were developed to assist teachers in understanding and integrating the NC Digital Learning Standards into the daily curriculum. The use of digital tools and content is already a part of the classroom consequently, it is our responsibility to enable students to use technology effectively and safely. That is the premise of the NC Digital Learning Standards. It is incumbent upon the teacher to integrate activities and lessons that enable students to understand the standards and achieve the goals and skills for the NC Digital Learning Standards.
The courses were designed to break the DLS into specific parts so that teachers can work through each standard while creating lesson plans with their students to develop the skills that are a part of each standard. Each course is self-paced and self-enrollment.
Participants will receive 2 full CEUs (20 hours) of digital, content or a combination of both for each course completed - completing the Canvas course, lesson plans implementing learned strategies.

Empowered Learner
This standard, Empowered Learner, is the cornerstone of which all the following standards are built, and while not every aspect of a learner’s experience that fosters empowerment requires technology, the NC DLS for students attributes a necessary function of a future-ready and able citizen.

Digital Citizen
As teachers, our role is to provide opportunities through informed and proactive modeling, social and civic engagement, civility, and informed use of digital-age tools and resources. Thus, all students need digital citizenship skills to participate fully in their communities and make smart choices online and in life.

Knowledge Constructor
There is little value in students researching and thinking in a vacuum, students must take on the role of information seekers, active investigators, curators, and creators in the digital space. They need to learn from observing, identifying quality sources, reasoning, deconstructing perceived limitations, and inquire about new ideas.

Innovative Designer
Design thinking is a solutions-based approach to problem-solving that is iterative (non-linear) and involves trial and error, opportunities to create new ideas and prototypes, and developing empathy.
Design thinking will ensure students have creative confidence in their abilities while developing their skills to problem solve. It also enables the development of optimistic and empathetic members of society.

Computational Thinker
Learning computer science skills will provide students with the opportunity to be successful in the future workforce, despite not knowing exactly what the workforce will look like. The goal is to teach students to THINK like computer scientists and be a “Computational Thinker”. With computational thinking, students have the confidence to solve complex problems and the skill set to do so.

Creative Communicator
A creative communicator is also developed over time. This is a student who is able to successfully convey meaning and ideas using the appropriate platforms, tools, styles, and media to meet their goals face-to-face and digitally. While many of the other NC DLS for Students are more technical and forward-thinking, this standard promotes our basic skills of communication.

Global Collaborator
The world as we know it is changing. Now more than ever students must not only be global citizens but global collaborators. A global collaborator is someone who reflects on their own practices, beliefs, and points of view, to make an informed decision in an attempt to better understand others. Global collaborators connect with learners of various backgrounds and cultures, examine issues with multiple viewpoints, and work with others towards an innovative solution. As teachers, we must afford students the opportunity to develop this skill.
