Middle school art is a time for students to expand their creativity, refine their skills, and discover their own artistic voice. In our classroom, students explore a wide variety of media, techniques, and themes while learning to think critically and express themselves through art.
By the end of the year, students will be able to:
Demonstrate understanding of the elements of art and principles of design in their work.
Use a variety of materials—such as pencils, paint, clay, paper mache, and digital tools—with increasing confidence.
Apply techniques like shading, blending, layering, perspective, and color mixing to create depth and realism.
Connect art to history, culture, and personal experiences, recognizing how artists are influenced by the world around them.
Critique artwork respectfully using art vocabulary, while reflecting on their own creative choices.
Showcase their work in a professional manner at our annual K–8 Art Show.
Over the years, students have loved exploring projects that challenge their imagination and skills, including:
Color Pencil Techniques – blending, layering, and shading to create realistic fruits, animal eyes, and objects.
Paper Mâché Animals – 3D sculptures that bring creativity to life.
Artist Trading Cards – miniature artworks that encourage experimentation and sharing.
Cardboard Shoes – designing wearable or sculptural shoes from cardboard with creative flair.
Miniature Rooms in Shoeboxes – building 3D dioramas filled with tiny furniture and detailed design.
Paper Mâché Food – crafting realistic (and sometimes whimsical) life-sized foods from paper mâché.
Sewing Plushies – learning basic stitching while creating stuffed creatures, characters, and designs.
Acrylic Paintings – using layering and brush techniques to make bold, colorful works on canvas.
In middle school, students are expected to take more responsibility for their work while encouraging and respecting their peers. Our classroom is a supportive environment where students can take risks, make mistakes, and grow as artists together.
