North Carolina has recently updated the Visual Arts Standards to better reflect the skills and creative practices students need in today’s world. The new standards emphasize not only creating and responding to art, but also making meaningful connections to culture, history, and personal experience. Students are encouraged to think like artists—experimenting with materials, problem-solving through design, and reflecting on their own choices—while also developing skills that support collaboration and career readiness. These changes aim to inspire deeper creativity, critical thinking, and a stronger appreciation for the role of art in our lives, and we look forward to exploring these exciting new standards together in class this year!
