May 14th, 2025 - It has been 4 months and 1 book fair since I last made an update on the progress of our library, and I can't wait to share some exciting things that are coming this Summer. Since January almost 600 more books have been added to the library shelves. As I make my way through the donated books I sometimes come across a 3rd or 4th copy of a book that our library doesn't really need. I have always been a big supporter of the little library program and the thought occurred to me that these books would be perfect for that purpose. So after gluing a book plate that says that our school was donating the book, I have been dropping the books off at local little libraries. This is only the first stage of the plan though. As of this Summer my husband and I will be working on building our own little library box to go next to our playground! This will not only benefit our students and further encourage them to read, but it will also benefit our local community. I will of course make sure that books placed in our box are appropriate. Anything that wouldn't be good for our students, I will just move to one of the other little libraries in the area. So if you have books that you would like to donate to library, feel free to drop them off at the office. Even books that don't pass our rigorous content standards do not go to waste. I donate anything we can't use or put in the little libraries with our book plate to a local church who sell the books and donate the money to charity. So a literary gift of any kind never goes to waste! Until next time, Happy Reading!
January 8th, 2025 - A new year marks a milestone in our library transfer project. We have hit 7,000 books! Thank you to all of you who have donated books to our library. It has both made the children very excited and consequently made the project take more time than anticipated. I estimate that we still have at least 10,000 more books to enter into the library system. I have been placing priority on books that I know the students enjoy and those that the teachers need for their lessons. This year's History Week will also mark another exciting development, an In-Person Book Fair that will be part of the festivities. With each passing week I have striven to make the library more and more of an asset to our school and to our students. So thanks again for all of your help as I continue toward completing this mission!
July 23rd, 2024 - Things are coming along well in the library so far. We have over 5,000 books that have been added into circulation and I expect a lot more before the school year starts. Some new things include a new layout for our shelving and new shelves. A big thank you to those who donated toward our new shelves and shelf/benches by purchasing from the Little Library Book Sale outside of the library. Every little bit helps us to be able to afford those upgrades that will really make our library shine (and of course help to make room for all of those donated books!). I am really excited to share all the new books with the students this year!
January 9th, 2024 - Things are going well with the new library system project. We currently have 4,781 books that have been entered into our library system since the beginning of the school year. Going through the collection book by book has not only allowed me to fix any books that are in disrepair but to also browse each book for inappropriate content. I am sad to say that some of the books have been removed due to damage or content issues, but that doesn't mean that our library will be lacking in books in any way. Thanks to the generous donations of books over the years I am rather confident that we will double or even triple the number of books that are accessible to the students in the coming year. I look forward to continuing to grow our book list and seeing your student's smiling faces when I find just the right book for them!
September 19th, 2023 - Over this Summer, I had the opportunity as your new librarian to reorganize and sort not only the library books that were currently being circulated but also the 4 closets of books that had been donated over the years. I was also able to find a new library system that would save the school hundreds of dollars every year. Along with the help of many volunteers, we were able to have a considerable amount of books ready for circulation on the first day of school, but unfortunately, this was only a fraction of the books that were in the library. I am working hard every week to input more of the books that the teachers and students have requested, but progress is slower than it was over the Summer with all the extra help. If you have been wondering why your student has only been able to check out one book per week, this is why. I want to have enough books for the last class of the week to have a good selection to choose from. I also have been instructed by the School Board to make sure that the books that the students are checking out contain appropriate content for their age. This has been a cause for upset when it comes to our more advanced readers, but I am doing my best to protect their young minds from content that they may not be ready for. I have spent the last month actively working to learn each student's reading level and interests. When a student requests a book of a certain genre or topic, I have in most cases been able to provide them with an age-appropriate option. If you have any questions for me about the library or how it is currently being run, feel free to email me directly.
