NASA-NIH Workshop on Collaborative Biomedical Research for Earth and Space
This free one-day workshop was convened to focus on spaceflight research needs, challenges, and capabilities to develop collaboration concepts which produce benefits for Earth and space exploration.
Description of the Workshop:
NASA and the NIH are both charged with conducting biomedical research for the benefit of humanity and each has unique resources and capabilities to accomplish this work. This workshop shared information on the open questions and challenges associated with spaceflight biomedical research from NASA's Space Biology Program and Human Research Program. These two NASA Programs cover fundamental biology using model organisms through medical application targeted for astronauts. With the expansion of research onboard the International Space Station and other unique NASA facilities and capabilities, the scientific investigations being conducted are having direct benefits to advancing fundamental biology, human space exploration, biomedical research and development, and education. NASA and the NIH brought together their science communities for this one-day workshop to obtain community comments and ideas for identifying collaborative research concepts that will lead to scientific advancements for both Agencies. This workshop involved presentations from NASA Headquarters Space Life and Physical Sciences Division, the NASA Space Biology Program, the NASA Human Research Program, and Institutes of the NIH. Particular focus was given to how an integrative approach to research may provide opportunities for cross-Agency collaborations to advance science and human health in space and on Earth. Short panel sessions for Q&A and discussions followed the primary topical workshop sessions. A roundtable session completed the workshop day, which gave attendees the opportunity to provide input and ideas for scientific collaborative concepts between the Agencies.
