Homework
At Ascent we believe that parents are the first teacher in our students lives. We love to partner with parents to guide students on their learning path. We know that life is busy and full. We work hard to find balance between school and home life. We also believe that math and literacy are foundational tools to success in the lifetime learning of our students. While we are careful not to load students with large amounts of work at home in second grade, we firmly believe that daily practice in both math and literacy are crucial to their growth.
I believe that small amounts of frequent practice is much more beneficial than doing a lot of work only sporadically. I like to think of it like stretching. It must be done daily to see improvements. But it doesn't need to take very long.
Singapore Math Workbooks
I will do my best to get their daily math worksheets completed while they are at school. I will give them time everyday to complete them. There may be times that they bring their workbook sheet home and they have errors that need corrections, or their worksheets are incomplete. As their first teacher, I encourage you to go over these sheet with them to support what we are learning at school. While it is not required, I believe it could be very helpful. It will also help you see how they are doing and what areas they could use some extra support.
Rocket Math Drills
Rocket math is a curriculum we use to help students become fluent in their math facts. It is a separate program from our Singapore Math curriculum. It is focused solely on math fact practice. This program allows students to progress at their own speed. You may have seen these math fact drill sheets come home after students have done them at school. These half sheets that come home will tell you what level, A-Z your student has gotten to. From this, you can see what math facts they are currently working on. A great way to help them is to drill these facts with them at home by making flashcards or verbally quizzing them.
Math Fact Practice Packets
These packets are the math homework that your student will be expected to complete at home. They serve as a bridge between their Singapore Math concepts curriculum, and their Rocket Math facts drills. They contain math facts to practice, but they may not be the same facts they a re woking on in drills. This is because they align with what we will see in their workbooks.
Math Fact Progression
This year students are going to be spending time practicing and learning math facts, beginning with addition, then progressing to subtraction. Our class will be working on addition facts within 20 until students can answer them instantly, without pausing before answering. Facts are introduced at the rate of two facts and their reverses per level. Students are given an opportunity daily to show that they have learned a set of facts by passing the test for that given level. You can help your child progress and learn faster by practicing at home the same facts your child is learning at school. It takes less than a total of five minutes of daily flashcard practice to support your child and it can be done any time you can find a few spare minutes in the day: on the way to school, before sports practice, etc.
Have your child read each fact aloud and give the answer. If your child hesitates, provide more practice with that fact by alternating it with the other facts. When practicing facts, daily practice is most effective, two short sessions are more effective than one longer session. Please offer plenty of praise. Your child’s hard work will pay off when they pass the level. Each level is cumulative and includes all the facts learned up to that level.
Learning all the facts can take hard work but future success in math is dependent upon knowing the facts automatically. Thank you for your support of this critical learning goal.
I have included below the math fact progression so that you know which facts your child is practicing along with links to printable flashcards if needed.
