Thank you for giving up your time to help our young readers grow and flourish! Reading volunteers are very much needed to allow students to have more individual time reading to an adult. Mrs. Priest will open the door at 2:30 when reading begins. Please leave with your child at 2:50 and wait for any siblings in the lobby. Thank you!!
Circulating volunteer roles (most will be asked to do this):
You will be given a clipboard with a paper to fill out as you circulate and check students.
Student pairs will raise their hand for an adult to check them after they have read their primary reader 2 times with their partner.
Choose a different random page (or two) for each child to read aloud to you. We need to make sure they are reading the sentences fluently.
If students are reading without continually having to stop and sound out words, please fill out the form on your clipboard with the student names and the title of the book finished. Also, put your initials by the title of the book on both students' reading papers (kept with the student). Then, ask them to choose another book of the same color (level). You can then move on to another pair with hands up.
If one or both are still struggling, have them read the book again. (Students have been matched in pairs due to very similar reading scores and levels and reading 1:1 with Ms. Priest). If one struggles more, ask the other student to help with words on the 3rd reading. Go on to help another pair with their hands raised.
Note: If there is down time with no pairs with raised hands, feel free to circulate and check that pairs are reading and on task. Students may also raise their hands if they need help reading a tricky word. Please help them sound it out.
There may be some students on chapter books. They read their book just once and have somebody check them every 10 pages. Have them each read a paragraph to you.
Working 1:1 with struggling readers (We may need you to help with this at times):
Sit with a pair and listen to them read - helping them sound out words. Have them alternate reading sentences (one student reads a sentence and the other reads the next sentence).
Have them read the reader at least 2 times until they are reading with minimal sounding out. It may need to be read 3-5 times and that is OK.
Put your initials by the title of the book on both students' reading papers (kept with the student).
Have them choose another book of the same color (level). Repeat the above with them.
