Expectations and Procedures in 1st Grade
Parents,
Please read the information below. We will spend much time practicing our procedures so that students know exactly what is expected of them in first grade.
Bathroom
When students enter in the morning, they are asked to try the bathroom after they check off their names. We take a class bathroom trip before PE and then twice in the afternoon. At other times, students are asked to raise their hands to take a bathroom pass and use the restroom responsibly. This will all be explained and modeled to students during the first week and students will be assisted until they are comfortable with using the pass.
Lunch & Snack
Lunch is eaten in the cafeteria, and snack is eaten in the classroom. Sharing of food is not allowed. We often have students in the class with nut & gluten allergies, so this is extremely important. Snack is at 1:00. It should be a dry snack that the student is able to open and eat independently. Our classroom has new wall-to-wall carpet that we need to take good care of. Only water is allowed to drink during snack. When students enter the classroom in the morning, they will be asked to take out their snack and put it behind their lunch box on their cubby shelf. Please see the Arrow resources to order lunch for your child from campus cuisine Lunch Program 2026-2027.pdf - Google Drive
Absences
As much learning takes place in the classroom, attendance is very important. Please keep your child home if he or she is sick. Please refer to the family handbook: Family Handbook - Northern Colorado (ascentcolorado.org) We understand that emergencies may arise. As a general school policy, teachers do not provide advance work ahead of a planned absence. Please continue to read with your student in the event of an absence and go over recent math pages / assessments that were sent home. Please report absences in SchoolPass. Student Birthdays
Each student receives a birthday sticker to wear on his or her birthday, and the class sings happy birthday. We do not have birthday parties here at school. Parents are welcome to join their son or daughter for lunch. We will not be distributing birthday or holiday invitations in class. Please use the school directory to reach out to other families for this purpose.
Gray Folder
We will provide your child with a gray folder for completed work sent home. Please have your child bring in this folder daily. Homework at this point is for you to read 20 min a night to your child using a book from home. Please record this in the reading log (in gray folder) starting the 2nd week of school. Readers will be sent home in about 6 weeks with new logs to complete (as per our literacy curriculum),
School Uniform
Please ensure that your child meets the uniform requirements. Hoodies may not be worn at school (regardless of the color). Please see The Arrow for more information on our uniform policy.
Parent Volunteers
We are very grateful for volunteers. I will send out requests in advance for help needed in the classroom or preparing papers / projects in the staff room. We will also need volunteers on upcoming special days (i,e, Wonder Days) and later in the quarter when we begin reading partner time.
