Powering the Next Generation of Creative Problem-Solvers

One of the core missions of SHTEAM Punks is to establish TWU as a community support hub for local Destination Imagination (DI) teams. DI is a global, project-based learning program that encourages teams of students to solve complex, open-ended challenges that fuse the arts, humanities, and sciences. We believe in DI because it perfectly embodies the SHTEAM Punks philosophy of playful innovation and radical collaboration.

What is Destination Imagination (DI)?

Destination Imagination is a global, non-profit organization dedicated to teaching students the creative process. It is often described as "problem-solving theater." In teams of 2-7, students tackle one of several open-ended challenges over a period of months, culminating in an 8-minute performance-based solution they have created entirely by themselves.

How does it work?

* Team Challenges: Each year, teams choose a challenge from a category like Technical, Scientific, Fine Arts, Improvisational, or Service Learning. These require a blend of research, writing, engineering, and artistic design.

* Instant Challenges: At competitions, teams also face a surprise "Instant Challenge" they must solve on the spot, testing their teamwork and quick thinking under pressure.

* The Golden Rule: No Interference. This is the core principle of DI. Adults can teach skills (e.g., how to use a power tool, the basics of story structure), but they cannot contribute ideas, designs, or labor to the team's actual solution. The work is 100% kid-driven.

DI is the embodiment of the interdisciplinary, hands-on learning we want to champion. A formal partnership offers a "high-impact, low-cost" way for TWU to:

* Develop the 4 C's: DI is a masterclass in Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, and Critical Thinking—the skills essential for 21st-century success.

* Create a K-12 Pipeline: By actively supporting local teams, we introduce elementary and middle school students to the TWU campus and brand, positioning us as the university of choice for creative, technical thinkers.

* Provide Powerful Learning Experiences: This partnership creates pathways for powerful service-learning and mentorship experiences, allowing TWU students to gain invaluable hands-on teaching and project management skills.

* Strengthen Community Bonds: Supporting a beloved, established program like DI is a powerful "town-and-gown" community partnership that directly serves the families of our community, including many TWU faculty and staff.

How We Help

Our faculty, staff, and student volunteers are actively providing mentorship and on-campus resources for teams at Nette Schultz Elementary and other area schools. We help teams brainstorm, learn new skills, and prepare for their competitions.
