Moodle 101

Creating a Media  (Audio or Video) Recording Using the HTML Text Editor

The Moodle text editor includes a feature that allows you to create a video or audio recording that is up to two minutes in length.   These short media recordings can be a personalized way to communicate information or provide assignment feedback to students.

Accessibility Note: One limitation of this feature is that these videos are unable to support Closed Captioning. Faculty with students requiring this accessibility accommodation should avoid using this video recording tool in your course.

Technical Note:  Videos created using this Moodle feature cannot be viewed from an Apple mobile operating system (iOS), meaning from an iPhone or iPad. Videos can be viewed on any browser (we recommend Chrome or Firefox) on a Mac laptop/computer, PC laptop/computer, or an Android mobile device like a smart phone or tablet.

Step 1: To create a video, click the Video Camera icon within the text editor.  Alternatively, clicking the Microphone icon can be used to create audio-only posts.

Tip: If you have trouble using the video recording tool, make sure you are running a current version of Chrome or Firefox!

Step 2: In the window that appears, click Start Recording.

Step 3: A pop-up will appear requesting access to your computer camera and microphone, click Allow.

Note: the appearance of this step will vary depending on browser and operating system.

Step 4: The system will begin recording, click Stop Recording when finished.

Step 5:  Click the play button to preview the video and then click Attach Recording  to add it to the field.  (Clicking Record again will re-record the video, if needed)

Note:  Be patient, there may be up to a 10 second delay while the video is being added to the Message field!

Step 6:  The video recording will appear as a preview within the Message field.

Step 7:  Enter additional text or media in the field as needed. Scroll down and click Save Changes on the bottom of the settings screen when finished.
