At Mechanicsville High School the NJROTC program was established in 2000 and currently enrolls over 110 students in grades 9 through 12. We place a strong emphasis on Community Service, Academics, Character Development, Physical Training, and Leadership. We maintain a very active calendar of events throughout the year including programs during summer break.
During a normal year we travel to a number of Military Bases and museums including various sites in Washington D.C. the US Naval Academy in Annapolis Maryland for football & basketball games, the Blue Angels air show at Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach, the Battleship Wisconsin at Nauticus in Norfolk, and rock climbing in Richmond. We usually participate in 2 local parades, and participate in a number of JROTC competitions with other JROTC schools throughout Virginia, Washington D.C., & Maryland.
NJROTC cadets participate in a number of outside, or extra-curricular, activities throughout the school year and during the summer months. These opportunities are designed to stimulate learning by hands-on experience and to reinforce classroom instruction. Some of these activities include:
School and local activities such as parades, community service projects and events, academic, athletic, drill, marksmanship and orienteering events and competitions.
Leadership training of about 1 week during the spring and summer months to include Basic Leadership Training, Leadership Academy, and Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) programs at major universities.
Orientation visits (3 to 5 days) to various naval and military bases.
Cruises aboard U.S. naval vessels (1 day to 2 weeks) normally conducted during the summer months.
The program is free to the cadets and gives a credit towards your high school diploma.
