The Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) is a program for high school students that started in 1964 to help them become better leaders and citizens. It's offered in over 580 high schools across the country and has more than 90,000 students, with classes taught by retired Navy, Marine, and Coast Guard members. Students learn about leadership, teamwork, history of the Navy, and other topics, and they also take part in fun activities like community service, fitness training, and competitions. Even though the program uses military-style uniforms and ranks, students are not required to join the military.
The mission of Mechanicsville NJROTC is to teach high school students the values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment, while helping them grow as leaders and responsible citizens. Since starting in 2000, the unit has earned several awards and sends cadets to leadership and training programs each summer. Cadets are also very active in the community, completing over 7,000 hours of volunteer service last year alone. The program relies on donations to cover costs for competitions, travel, and other activities, and supporters are encouraged to contribute.
NJROTC builds character, leadership, citizenship, and respect for authority while encouraging patriotism and service. It promotes high school completion, higher education, and community service, while teaching discipline, teamwork, and healthy living. Cadets also gain an understanding of national security, exposure to military careers, and a positive alternative to gangs and risky behaviors.
Students in grades 9–12 at the host school can join if they meet academic, conduct, physical, and grooming standards. Schools may also allow “special NJROTC cadets” under open enrollment policies—these students can participate in most activities and wear the uniform but do not count toward the unit’s enrollment numbers. Extra resources for these students are provided by the school.
Cadets are more likely to graduate high school, attend college, and succeed academically. The program is free and offers test prep, leadership training, and character development. Cadets gain teamwork, discipline, and life skills, while avoiding drugs and unhealthy behaviors. Graduates can receive advanced military enlistment rank, and top cadets may be nominated for U.S. service academy appointments. NJROTC also strengthens the bond between schools, communities, and the military.
