Awards and promotions are given promptly, usually at the next monthly formation. Promotions are based on knowledge, ability, and performance — not position—except for three fixed leadership roles: Cadet Commanding Officer (C/LCDR), Executive Officer (C/LT), and Battalion Senior Chief Petty Officer (BSC).

Cadets must meet requirements in:

• Time in grade

• Academic and drill exams

• Community/service hours

• Good conduct and uniform grades

• Chain of Command recommendations
  
  

All cadets must earn at least one promotion each year (before spring break) to stay in the program. Promotions from Basic Leadership Training do not count toward this requirement. Advancing in rank shows discipline and initiative, which are essential for continuing in NJROTC.
