The Rifle team is an integral part of the NJROTC program. A person’s body type and athletic ability do not determine their level of success in this sport. Rifle team cadets succeed because of their high level of motivation, commitment to excellence, dedicated practice and good old fashioned hard work. Air rifle marksmanship is one of the safest sports to participate in.
Rifle team members develop coordination, self-control, mental discipline and time management skills and must demonstrate strict adherence to safety rules. It also allows cadets to develop personal pride and a sense of accomplishment as they become more proficient with their rifle skills. Cadets will shoot the Crosman Challenger .177 air rifle utilizing the National Three-Position Air Rifle Shooting rules and standards. Cadets fire at targets from a distance of 10 meters in three different positions, prone, standing and kneeling.
Rifle team offers many valuable benefits to cadets who participate. The Georgia High School Association recognizes competitive rifle as a varsity sport. Cadets can compete in Regional and State competitions and many other Postal competitions from all over the country. Rifle shooting is an NCAA collegiate championship sport. Scholarship opportunities for high school students are available to qualifying cadets.
