Independence Day is an annual celebration of the day India gained freedom from foreign rule. It was a historic day for our nation, for after years of struggling against the British rule India was officially free. Indians celebrate this day annually, taking the time to remember the hero's that helped us gain Independence. On August 15, 1947, the first Prime Minister of Independent India Jawaharlal Nehru unveiled India’s tricolor flag at the Red Fort in Delhi. This practice continues till date as along with the flag hoisting, the Prime Minister delivers a speech for the historic monument.
India had been ruled by the British for several years, India was ruled by the East India Company. In 1757 the Company won the Battle of Plassey started exerting power over India. In 1957 India had its first rebellion against the foreign rule in which almost the entire country united against the British. Unfortunately, India was defeated but after that Indian rule passed to the British crown who ruled till India was independent. It was only after a long campaign for independence and Britain being weakened after two world wars was India finally granted it's freedom.
India gained independence on 15th August 1947 at midnight. The first Prime Minister of Independent India Jawaharlal Nehru unveiled India’s tricolor flag at the Red Fort in Delhi. Our first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, gave a beautifully worded speech starting with the words, “At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom.” Independence Day is a reminder of the sacrifices of our valiant freedom fighters who stood up against the colonizers and even suffered harsh consequences unflinchingly, so that the later generations could breathe in free air.
Independence Day 2024 Theme
As India celebrates its 79th Independence Day, the government of India has announced the theme for this year is Naya Bharat or Developed India. According to an official release, the subject represents India's goal of creating a prosperous, safe, and independent country by 2047 as it advances the government's viksit Bharat vision.
As part of Independence Day Celebrations-2025, the Ministry of Defense, in collaboration with MyGov, aims to inspire patriotic fervor among the youth and masses through engaging activities. These include nationwide quiz competitions, reel-making contests, patriotic dress contests, painting contests, and essay contests to encourage creativity and national pride among citizens, inviting them to share their personal expressions of patriotism. These initiatives are designed to instill a deeper appreciation for India's rich heritage, commemorate the sacrifices of freedom fighters, and unite citizens in celebrating the spirit of independence.
On August 15, 2025, the flag hoisting ceremony for the 79th Independence Day will occur, with Prime Minister Modi delivering an address from the Red Fort. At the Red Fort’s historic ramparts, Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the flag, marking India’s 79th year of freedom.
