Looking for tools to support online instruction? Check out some of these options!
Much as technology is used to support specific pedagogy, an online network learning environment (ONLE) supports online instructional strategies. Certainly, some instructional strategies are more suited for ONLE than not, but the focus here is on developing an environment that empowers participation and networking. Rooted in constructivist and connectivist learning theory, learners in an ONLE connect, create, and curate resources and tools. They develop skills necessary in a rapidly-changing digital landscape, focusing on information curation over memorization. When considering an ONLE, an instructor needs to ask whether it is able to facilitate collaboration and networking. If not, then the ONLE may need to be adjusted or augmented with other tools.
The eBook below summarizes key ONLE concepts. Each chapter includes an explanation of the topic, interactive media, a few activities that encompass a variety of Web 2.0 tools, and other opportunities to engage with your personal, technological, and content-rich networks. The eBook, embedded media, and activities are designed to be available on all devices and accessible to all users, and each chapter offers insight into the benefits and practices of implementing ONLE.
As editor, I developed the book template and coordinated with authors to ensure accurate and timely additions of their chapters. I checked each chapter for adherence to accessibility guidelines and ensured uniform formatting. While I adjusted chapter layouts to improve visual appeal, my co-editor checked for spelling and grammar mistakes and summarized each chapter for the foreword.
