About UNAM

UNAM Mérida campus

The Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) is the oldest institution of higher education in the Americas. It was founded on September 21, 1551. There are 3 Nobel Prize laureates among its alumni: Alfonso García Robles (Peace), Octavio Paz (Literature), and Mario Molina (Chemistry). The main campus is located in Mexico City, and there are several satellite campuses throughout Mexico, the United States, and Canada. It is the largest university in Latin America, with over 300,000 students. UNAM's stated mission is to serve the population through education, research, and dissemination of culture.
