Conversation Groups

Conversation Groups are small groups of no more than 5 students that meet up to have relaxed, fun conversations in the target language, providing you with practice, inspiration, and motivation for improved conversational skills in that language. Each group is led by a Conversation Facilitator (or CF) who is a fluent speaker of the language -- mostly NAU student peers (especially international students from target-language speaking countries) -- and they are excited to share their language and culture with you while learning about life in the U.S. and at NAU!

(Please note that you can only register 3 weeks in advance for any given session, but you can see the available sessions through the end of the semester to plan ahead. If you have problems registering, please email GELL.Center@nau.edu)

GELL Center Conversation Groups are limited to 5 students and last approximately 1 hour. Conversations have an informal, relaxed atmosphere, with a primary focus on cultural exchange and communication. Come to chat with a native or near-native peer speaker in your target language!

POLICY and DEADLINES

Conversation Groups are focused on communication and cultural exchange: While Conversation Facilitators are not there to help you with homework or tutor you in the language, they can give you an hour-long micro-immersion in their language and culture, reminding you of why that language is such a fantastic thing to study! For tutoring availability and schedules, please contact your instructor.

Conversation Group Sessions are in person and take place in the GELL Center (Babbitt Academic Annex, room 107). While walk-ins are welcome for any sessions that haven't filled, advanced seat reservation is recommended (individual sessions with zero registration may be cancelled, so registering secures both your seat and the session). Registration closes 2 hours before the conversation's published start time. Once you register, you must attend or cancel before registration closes to avoid being blacklisted for future sessions and to allow a walk-in student to take your seat.

Students arriving more than 5 minutes late are subject to losing their reserved seat. Students who arrive more than 10 minutes late are not guaranteed a seat, nor will they receive credit for participation (if that is something offered in your course). Please arrive on time. Students who leave more than 15 minutes early will receive no credit for participation.

When you arrive for your Conversation Group, please check-in first with the GELL Center Assistant at the front desk before signing in on one of the iPads.

Use one of the buttons above to find available conversation group session times and register. Registration is through an event calendar provided by Cline Library and requires an NAU Login.
