Evan Moor Science Works Grades 4-6

Science Works units for grades 4-6 present lessons that address the National Science Education Standards and Benchmarks for Science Literacy. As students participate in hands-on activities, they will practice skills outlined in the NSE Science Standards as inquiry.

Weather: presents information and investigations on these six concepts--Weather changes from day to day and over the seasons; Describing weather conditions in measurable quantities; Water circulates through Earth’s atmosphere; Clouds directly affect weather; Climate is affected by Earth’s features; Local weather conditions can be used to forecast weather.

The Human Body: presents information and investigations on these nine concepts--Cells are the fundamental unit of life; Specialized cells protect the body from harmful substances; Food follows a path as it is digested; Good nutrition provides energy for cell growth and repair; The heart and lungs work together; Muscles and bones provide movement and support; The nervous system relays messages to and from the brain; Parents pass traits to future generations; Body systems interact.

Simple Chemistry: presents information and investigations on these six concepts: Objects can be described by the properties of the materials from which they are made; Substances can exist in different states—solid, liquid, or gas; Substances have characteristic properties; Mixtures can sometimes be separated into the original substances using characteristic properties; Elements are organized in the periodic table; When substances react chemically, they can form new substances.

Energy: presents information and investigations on these seven concepts--Sunlight contains energy; Sound is produced by vibrations; Electrical energy flows through electric circuits; Magnetism is related to electricity; Heat energy can be transferred; Energy can change from one form to another; Energy can change matter.

Planet Earth: presents information and investigations on these seven concepts--Earth is composed of rocks, water, and gases; The core, mantle, and crust make up the layers of the Earth; Earth’s crust contains continents and oceans; Constructive forces affect landforms; Destructive forces affect landforms; Soil is made up of a variety of components; Water cycles through Earth and its atmosphere.

Living Things: presents information and investigations on these six concepts--Living things can be classified according to their structures; Living things have requirements to live; Living things reproduce; Ecosystems are made up of living things and nonliving factors; Structures and behaviors of living things help them to survive in specific habitats; Energy from the Sun is transferred to living things.
