Language Arts Practice Resources

The following resources are available to provide practice in one or more areas of Language Arts. They are not complete curriculums, but provide an important element of review and reteaching.

BrainPop: an animated, educational website for kids. Students can watch a variety of educational videos, then follow up with an online quiz, writing activities, vocabulary study, games, and more. This is a good supplement to any Language Arts program. See your adviser to set up a login. Grades 4-8.

Evan Moor--50 Little Stories to Take Home: Read the stories and show the illustrations to your child over and over again, then help them create a book of the story to take home. To reproduce these little stories, cut the pages in half and staple them together to make four-, six-, and eight-page books that your students will delight in reading for themselves. All the stories are fully illustrated with cute and lively line art. Grades K-1.


Evan Moor--High Frequency Words Stories & Activities: Delightful stories and activities help your child reinforce word recognition skills. Focused and repeated high-frequency word practice is an important part of learning to read. Make sure your child gets the practice they need with words taken from the Dolch Basic Sight Vocabulary list and Fry's Instant Words list. Grades K-3.

Evan Moor--How to Make Books with Children: create charming shape-books on a variety of topics. Writing forms accommodate individual writing levels and include: prewriting suggestions, literature references, oral language experiences that build vocabulary, background for writing, blank forms for picture stories, cloze forms for "complete the sentences" stories, and lined forms for written stories. This easy-to-use resource contains 16 individual book-report forms, 18 individual book projects, and 10 group book projects. Each has step-by-step directions, book lists for individual book reports, as well as standards-based literature skills. Available at four levels. Grades K-6.

Evan Moor--How to Write a Story: includes information on setting the stage for writing, teaching the parts of a story, and step-by-step writing units. Story Writing Ideas include: retelling a fairy tale, writing a pattern story, writing a circle story, and writing a sequence-and-write story. There are also directions, forms, and patterns for 5 story-writing centers covering: who, what, where, and when; starting with a picture; story starters; story parts; and train tales. Grades 1-3.

Evan Moor--How to Write a Story: packed with easy-to-execute ideas and dozens of writing forms that will assist student in refining their sentence writing skills. Skills learned include: characters, setting, plot, and conclusion. Guidelines are presented for writing in six different genres: realistic fiction, historical fiction, mystery, adventure, fantasy, science fiction. Grades 4-6.

Evan Moor--How to Write Simple Science Reports: everything you need to cultivate children’s natural curiosity in wild animals and dinosaurs and turn it into animal-topic reports. Step-by-step instructions will help you guide each student in the creation of a report they can be proud of. Student pages consist of a page of science information for each topic, patterns for report cover, and inside report illustration for each animal topic.
