Grammar

grammar: the whole system and structure of a language

"A schoolchild should be taught grammar for the same reason that a medical student should study anatomy." -E.B. White

Analytical Grammar: Analytical Grammar teaches English grammar, punctuation, and usage.  It is designed to be taught in three grammar “seasons” over three years; however, it is flexible enough to be adapted to a one- or two-year schedule. Analytical Grammar is an easy-to-follow, step-by-step approach that will prepare your student for high school and college-level work.  The home teacher does not need to be a grammar expert but can learn along with the student. Grades 6-8.

Editor in Chief: Children can improve their spelling, punctuation, and grammar skills in context with the brief exercises in Editor in Chief. A reading selection is accompanied by a picture and a caption. The problem is to identify errors and make proper corrections. An editing checklist is at the front of each book to alert students to types of errors they should watch for. A substantial "Guide to Grammar, Usage, and Punctuation" is at the back of each book for handy reference. Extensive answer keys identify and explain errors (helpful for us parents who will have trouble finding some of them ourselves). Grades 2-8.

Evan Moor--Daily Language Review: This book contains focused practice exercises that will keep your student's language skills sharp and expanding. As an added benefit, the items are presented in a variety of standardized testing formats. Weekly units are presented follow this format: Monday-Thursday (five items) -- two sentences to edit, including corrections in punctuation, capitalization, spelling, grammar, vocabulary, plus three items that practice a variety of language and reading skills. Friday -- practice cycles through four formats - language usage, identifying and correcting mistakes, combining sentences, choosing reference materials. Grades 1-6.

Evan Moor--Daily Paragraph Editing: contains everything you need to lead targeted language lessons by providing 36 weeks of frequent, focused language practice to help your student learn the conventions of standard English grammar and usage. The concise daily activities are ideal “warm-up” exercises to begin your language arts lessons. Grades 2-8.

Evan Moor--Grammar & Punctuation: 25 grammar and punctuation rules are supported by reproducible charts and practice pages to help students develop important language skills. Interactive and reproducible activities motivate students as they practice grammar and punctuation skills such as: kinds of sentences; parts of a sentence; conjunctions; common and proper nouns; singular, plural, and possessive nouns; pronouns and possessive pronouns; verbs; subject-verb agreement; present and past tenses; adjectives; comparative and superlative adjectives; using I and me correctly; commas in lists, dates, addresses, and with introductory words and names; quotation marks; using can and may correctly. Grades 1-6.

Evan Moor--Language Fundamentals: this comprehensive teaching resource helps students master the conventions of standard English and boosts their vocabulary acquisition. Lessons are clearly organized by language skills and standards to help target instruction. Includes skill-based activities; review pages with multiple choice, constructed response, and open-ended questions. Grades 1-6.

First Language Lessons: This language program combines Charlotte Mason’s ideas with classical education elements. It also has similarities with many elements found in English for the Thoughtful Child, which originally was written in 1903 and then republished in 1990 for use by Charlotte Mason followers.  Both implement prompts for discussion, narration, and writing along with scripted grammar lessons and exercises intermixed with pictures, poems, fables and other short writings. First Language Lessons puts a much stronger emphasis on recitation, repetition, and memorization which classical education emphasizes in the grammar stage of learning. Students practice copy work, which develops writing skills, familiarity with spelling and punctuation usage.  Through narration practice children are being prepared for their own original writing. Great for students who need social interaction. Requires parent/teacher instruction. Grades K-4.

Fix it Grammar: This program uses classic stories or parodies of classic stories and each day the student is to fix embedded errors in one-three sentences that will cumulatively tell a story.  It is a perfect program for those who are ready to apply their knowledge of grammar & editing skills.  Included is a Teacher’s Guide with instructions for downloading the student e-book and resource book.  This allows students to write directly in their books.  Classics stories such as Tom Sawyer, Frog Prince, Little Mermaid, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight are also found in the student book.  Students of multiple grade levels can use this. Grades 5-8.

G.U.M (Grammar, Usage, Mechanics): Each book contains 50 short, flexible lessons.  Each lesson is on a single, easy-to-use, perforated page. Relevant themes give students something good to “chew on” as they learn.  Extra practice, assessment, and testing options are included. Grades 2-8.

Junior Analytical Grammar: This interactive program between child and parent is divided into 11 units; each takes about a week to go through. Each unit builds on the one before, so students use what they've already learned to master the next concept. It is intended to introduce the ideas of English grammar. This unit covers the same material found in the first ten units of Analytical Grammar, but the exercises are shorter and the reading level is lower. Grades 4-5.

Junior Analytical Grammar Mechanics: Designed to follow Junior Analytical Grammar, this program covers instruction in punctuation, capitalization, and usage. Grades 4-5.

NoRedInk: an online tool used for teaching grammar, usage, mechanics and style to students in intermediate grades. Teachers can assign a variety of diagnostic and instructional materials to their students through NoRedInk. Grades 4-8.
