February is Black History Month!
As we recognize Black History Month, we want to take a moment to share how our school community is honoring the contributions, achievements, and lived experiences of Black individuals, both throughout history and in our present day.
This month provides a meaningful opportunity for students to learn about Black excellence, hear diverse voices, and engage in conversations that promote inclusion, respect, and belonging. Learning about Black history is not limited to the past; it also helps students better understand the world around them, see themselves and others reflected in their learning, and build empathy and appreciation for different cultures and identities. Even small, intentional moments can have a powerful impact on our children.
Throughout the month, students may engage in activities such as:
Listening to read-alouds that highlight Black leaders, inventors, artists, and everyday changemakers
Learning fun and inspiring “Did You Know?” facts about influential Black figures, both past and present
Celebrating themes of joy, resilience, creativity, and community
Participating in age-appropriate conversations about kindness, fairness, and standing up for others
Families can support these learning experiences by:
Using simple language (such as fair vs. unfair, including others, and treating everyone with respect)
Encouraging children to ask questions and sharing honest, developmentally appropriate responses
Letting children know it’s okay to pause conversations and return to them later as questions arise
If you’re interested in exploring Black History Month at home, these resources offer engaging, child-friendly materials:
National Museum of African American History and Culture – Kid-friendly videos, stories, and printable activities
Storyline Online & Epic! – Read-alouds and book collections centered on Black voices
PBS LearningMedia – Short videos and lessons designed for elementary learners
I also wanted to share that I will be using Black History Month themed posters and coloring pages during drop-in counseling times with students.
Thank you for partnering with us as we work together to create a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive learning environment for all students. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions, comments, or would like additional resources!
Our students are celebrating Ramadan February 17, 2026 – March 19, 2026! Please read here for how we are supporting students who are observing at NCS.
