For many California Native communities, language loss has been a direct result of historical trauma, boarding schools, and assimilation policies that sought to erase our culture. But our languages are still here, and so is our commitment to ensuring they thrive once again.
Language connects us to our ancestors, to the land, and to each other. It carries the stories, prayers, and wisdom that define who we are. By revitalizing our languages, we are reclaiming our history, healing from past injustices, and ensuring that our future generations can speak, live, and lead in the language of their people.
At Native Sisters Circle, we believe that language is resilience. Through our work, we are ensuring that our voices and our ancestors’ voice are never silenced again.
Language is the heartbeat of our traditions. Through our programs, we encourage youth reconnect with their heritage, ensuring they feel rooted in their identity and confident in their cultural knowledge.
Through initiatives like the California Language Leadership Movement, we are developing opportunities for Native youth to learn, practice, and preserve their languages. Our goal is for each participant to confidently greet, introduce themselves, and offer a prayer in their Native tongue.
Supporting Tribal Language Teachers & Keepers
Elders and language keepers hold the wisdom of our past. We work to support and uplift their efforts, ensuring that their knowledge is passed on.
We are not just teaching words we are building leaders. Our youth participants will gain the skills and confidence to advocate for language preservation, ensuring that revitalization efforts continue for generations to come.
