The Advisors of NHS would like to share some information about the process of applying and being accepted into the National Honor Society. This information should help you plan out what requirements you need to fulfill to be ready for the applications come your junior year. Please see below for requirements and timelines.
-After midterms of your junior year, if your cumulative GPA is 3.4 or higher, you will receive an invitation to apply.
-If your GPA is not at 3.4 at that time, a second round of invitations will go out at the beginning of your senior year, so you have time to work towards that goal.
When are you invited?
-About 10 days after grades close for Semester 1 of your junior year, and again within the first two weeks of your Senior year
- Once you are sent the application, you have a required meeting to attend before submitting, and one week to submit the application. There is no time to complete requirements once the applications go out, so make sure everything is done and filed before you get the invitation.
What are the requirements?
1) Cumulative weighted GPA of 3.4+
2) 50+ hours of community service. 30 of those hours must be logged with guidance, the remainder are your responsibility to track and keep evidence of
3) 2 strong leadership roles
4) No major or multiple discipline/academic write ups
-There are lots of options! Think of roles that you were “in charge” of planning, organizing, and keeping other people safe. Some common leadership roles: captain of any school team, counselor at a camp (does not include Natick Summer Academics), elected position of a club or organization (does not need to be school associated), work trainer, referee, lifeguard, working with special needs students. If you’re unsure, please ask.
What roles are not accepted as leadership?
-Private tutoring or coaching, babysitting, Natick Summer Academics, Mentorship, Equity Co-op, class managers, among others
-Juniors will find out before April Break, Seniors will find out before November 1
What happens if you’re not accepted?
-There are lots of reasons that cause people to not get an acceptance letter (leadership roles are not strong enough, didn’t file hours in guidance, missed application deadline, discipline issues, etc). Don’t worry, you have an entire semester and summer to sort out any issues and apply again! If you are not accepted in your first round, you can schedule a meeting with the advisors to discuss options and plan to move forward for the Senior year applications.
What can you do now?
Use the summer to secure your leadership roles and community service hours.
-Reach out with questions now so you’re ready to apply.
Once you’re in, what is required?
-In order to stay in good standing and graduate with a National Honor Society stole (fancy gold sash!), you need to complete an additional 25 hours of community service, 5 hours in a Lead Project, maintain your GPA, attend monthly meetings, and not have any discipline or academic issues arise. We also participate in Natick Days and have an Induction Ceremony (a fancy ceremony that your friends and family can watch you be officially welcomed into NHS)
Does it cost anything?
-Nope…kind of! The only thing you’ll be responsible for paying for is your stole for graduation. We use the money we raise during Natick Days to offset that cost. Last year the cost after fundraising was $16 per member. The more money we raise, the cheaper the stole becomes.
