Grade R (also called the Reception Year) is the year of schooling before Grade 1. In 2010, the Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) documents were first implemented for Grade R. It is not compulsory for children to attend Grade R.
Children who attend pre-primary education are less likely to repeat grades or drop out of school. Enrolling a child for Grade-R is not only vital for laying a good foundation, but it also sets the tone for the rest of their schooling life.
Children in Grade R are learning about routine by being in a routine. When children know the order of events in a school day, they are always prepared for what comes next. Grade R helps the children to adjust to classroom routines and to understand what is expected of them at different points in the school day.
