Grade 1 Life Skills covers 3 main subject areas - Beginning Knowledge and Personal and Social Wellbeing, Creative Arts and Physical Education.
The subject Life Skills is an essential part of the Foundation Phase curriculum. This is because Life Skills addresses not only the cognitive development of learners, but development in other areas as well, such as social relations and interactions, and the emotional dimensions involved in these.
The aims of our life skills curriculum are to know and understand what constitutes a healthy lifestyle;
be aware of safety issues;
understand what makes for good relationships with others;
have respect for others;
be independent and responsible members of the school community
Life Skills Lesson Plan
Aim:
- Learners will be able to identify which animals can be kept as pets.
Overall objectives:
- Learners will know the basic skills needed to take care of pets
- Learners will be able to associate certain items with what is needed to care for a specific pet.
Resources:
- Flash cards with examples of pets plus cards with the names of the animals

Introduction (10 minutes):
Discuss learners’ prior knowledge of pets.
- Ask learners to identify which animals they have seen as pets.

Exposition (10 minutes):
Complete activities below with learners.
Activity 1: Listening and Speaking
Discuss what was seen on the video.
Ask the learners if they are taking care of their pet? (if they have one)
Activity 2: Word recognition
Stick images of pets on the board on one end and the other end put all the names and ask learners to identify under what picture the name goes.
Activity 3: Thinking and Reasoning
Draw a line to show what things you will buy to care for your pet.
Conclusion (10 minutes):
Read the poem to the learners and discuss what they have learnt.
Discuss the following:
- our responsibility as human beings towards animals
- the do’s and do not’s when caring for pets.
- how to treat your own pets and any animal
Class Activity :
- Provide learners with a blank sheet of paper that has been divided into 3.
- Distribute the sheet of paper that has varies animals (pets) and their necessities when being cared for by their owner.
- Ask learners to cut and paste on the blank sheet of paper, that has been divided, what each type of animal (pet) would need in order to be properly cared for.
Group Work (25 minutes):
Group Turtles (intermediate)
Will be tasked to draw an animal and write 1-2 sentences about the animal (pet) should be cared for
Group Monkeys (advanced)
Will be tasked to write 2-3 sentences their pet or if they had a pet which animal would they want and how would they treat it
FOCUS GROUP
Group Penguins (beginner)
Will be tasked to draw a picture of a pet or their own pet and show each other and discuss how they will care for their pet and how it should be treated
Aim:
· Learners are able to identify that families come in all shapes and sizes.

Introduction (15 minutes) On Mat (All activities, Questions etc.)
· Tell learners you will be talking about families today
· Ask learners what they think a family is and who are their family members
· Have learners identify how many family members do they have and differentiate between immediate and extended family members
Purpose of Activity
· Introduces sentence building to learners
· Enhances listening and speaking skills
· Allows learners to practice putting their thoughts to paper
Activity
· WHOLE CLASS:
o Teacher and learners read together the text on pg. 36.
o Learners complete pg. 36 based on words provided on pg. 35.
o Teacher and learners read together the text on pg. 37 under the heading “Let’s read”.
o Learners look at the pictures under the heading “Let’s talk” in the workbook on pg.37 and discuss how these children show their family that they care
· PAIR WORK:
o In pairs learners’ role play to show what is happening in each of the pictures under the heading “Let’s talk” on pg. 37.
o Learners draw a picture of what they do to show your family that you care on pg. 37. Tell your friend what you have drawn.
Exposition (20 minutes)
· Introduce to learners the book, ‘Aren’t You Lucky!’ by Candice and Laurence Anhott
· Ask learners questions after every page based on the context and how it relates to the topic of ‘My Family’
· Allow learners to give their thoughts on how the character – little brother – reacted when he received the news that he will be getting another sibling
· Ask learners if they have little siblings and to share a story with the class – if they want.
Conclusion (10 minutes)
· Recap what learners have done and ask the class for any volunteers to share what they have drawn and/or written about with their peers.
