STEP 4: STAY MOTIVATED

STEP 4: STAY MOTIVATED

What’s your end goal? Remind yourself about what your objectives are and what you want to achieve. Try to stay focussed, even if things get tough. Ask for help if you need it. Get involved with the college and your class group and build supportive relationships.

THINK POSITIVELY AND STAY MOTIVATED

When you're studying it helps to remember your goals why you are doing all the hard work in the first place - like a course or career you're working towards.

Think positively - when you think positively, your brain will be more likely to absorb the material because you will be focused on doing well. This can help to alleviate stress. Try imagining passing the assignment, or test, and reminding yourself that you know the material. This will make you feel better and stay more focused.

Stay motivated - To help you stay motivated, you could also decorate your study space with inspirational quotes or photos of people you admire or the family members you want to make proud.

TAKE BREAKS

Working too long on a subject, or task is tiring and can actually decrease your performance, so it’s very important to take regular breaks. Try setting yourself goals - such as finishing one chapter - and then reward yourself with a short break to get a snack or drink. However, if you find yourself zoning out and daydreaming, it may be time to close the books for a little while or to focus on a different subject.

Get away - When you take a break, make sure you get away from your desk or study space to take a walk or get some fresh air to clear your head; this will allow you to come back refocused.

Take regular small breaks - Taking a break doesn’t mean take an hour break for every 15 minutes you study, but you do need to take time to rest your brain and absorb the information. Set an alarm for every 25-30 minutes you study and take a short 5-10 minute break.

ASK FOR HELP

It’s okay to ask for help. If you feel overwhelmed or have questions about a subject area, your lecturers will be happy to help you. It’s important to communicate with them. Student Services can also answer some of the questions you might have and can signpost you to support services.
