NO SMOKING POLICY
NO SMOKING POLICY
We're proud of our smoke free campuses and although we recognise your freedom of choice to smoke or not to smoke, City of Glasgow College must protect the rights of everyone to a smoke free environment by eliminating the risks associated with second hand smoke. Exposure to tobacco smoke either by smoking or passive smoking is the largest single preventative cause of death and disease in the UK. This is why we have smoke-free campuses at both Riverside and City. The College has developed a No Smoking Policy in line with the Smoking, Health and Social Care (Scotland) Act 2005 which makes it a criminal offence to smoke within no-smoking places.
This No Smoking Policy extends to the use of vapes/e-cigarettes which typically contain nicotine and can become highly addictive. Although research has shown that vaping is less harmful than smoking it is not fully risk free. Further information on the risks and effects of vaping can be found here.
SMOKE FREE CAMPUS FAQ
Q: What does this mean?
A: This means that smoking and vaping are not allowed anywhere on campus. This includes:
City and Riverside Campus buildings
Student Accommodation
At or near entrances and open windows
Internal and external terraces
Courtyards, gardens, etc
College vehicles
Q: Where can I go to smoke/vape?
A: Because we’re smoke free, we don’t have any spaces for students to smoke/vape. For those who move off campus to smoke, we ask you to be respectful of our neighbours and make use of bins provided by Glasgow City Council. Remember, you can be fined for littering.
Q: Why can’t I vape? It’s safe.
A: While vaping or using electronic cigarettes is potentially less harmful than smoking tobacco products it is not entirely risk free, some models can look like a real cigarette and can create the impression to others that it’s okay to smoke.
Q: What happens if I smoke on campus?
A: If you smoke within College buildings you can be fined under the law. If you choose to smoke on our grounds you will be asked to move off campus or you could face disciplinary action.
Q: I want to quit. Can you help?
A: We actively encourage healthy lifestyles at the College and work in partnership with NHS Scotland to support students to access smoking cessation services. The Students’ Association and Student Services run regular events for students to encourage smoking cessation.
