Talented Twenty Program

What is the Talented Twenty Program?

The Talented Twenty program is part of the Governor’s Equity in Education Plan. The purpose is to guarantee admission to students who succeed in their respective K-12 public schools, and to encourage students to strive for better grades and pursue rigorous academic courses. Students eligible for the Talented Twenty program are guaranteed admission, within space and fiscal limitations, to one of the twelve state universities. These students are considered a priority for the awarding of funds from the Florida Student Assistance Grant (FSAG), a need-based grant. Talented Twenty students must meet FSAG eligibility requirements in order to be eligible for priority funding. Please note that while eligible students are guaranteed admission at one of the state universities, they are not guaranteed admission to the university of their choice.

What are the requirements to qualify for the program?

In order to qualify for the Talented Twenty Program, the student must:

Does the student have to complete an application to be considered for the Talented Twenty Program?

No, there is no application for the Talented Twenty Program. Transcripts of potentially eligible students are submitted by the district/school for evaluation.

Students who are eligible for Talented 20 are not officially recognized as Talented 20 students until after the determination of rank after the posting of 7th semester grades. Students should be aware that universities prefer students to apply by early fall for the following year’s admission (such as by November 2018 for fall 2019 admission). If students do not apply before they are determined to meet all of the Talented 20 requirements, choice may be limited. If students have not started the admission process at all until late spring, they will probably find that campus housing is closed and financial aid is limited. Students should apply to at least three state universities and be denied admission at all three before appealing to the Florida Board of Governors for assistance with further admission application review.

Ivy League/Extremely Competitive Schools

US News & World Report

Why some applications get rejected:

·         GPA/Test scores

·         Insufficient academic rigor

·         Lack of demonstrated interest

·         Application essay errors

·         Poor fit

·         Academic integrity concerns

·         Competition

Holistic review-still have to have the GPA and test scores- those are common reasons why someone would be eliminated quickly without a comprehensive review.

Application Essay Errors

·         Rush and don’t proofread

·         List other schools and don’t change it to school you’re applying to

Leadership positions and college-level research experience on a resume can grab the attention of admission officers looking beyond transcripts.

Competitive schools will almost always have lots of “lookalike” students, and with more students than they can accept, they’re looking for differentiators to prioritize admitting some over others. Rec letters, essays and extracurricular activities are heavily emphasized in Ivy League admissions. The average SAT was 737 for EBRW and 762 for math. ACT 34.

Essays- Why this college essay frequently tips the scales. Successful applicants go beyond “how awesome the college is, something the schools already know. Look for something you have done or accomplished that sets you apart form the crowd. Complete optional parts of the application. Early applications tend to have more competitive credentials. Princeton, Harvard and Yale have non binding early action programs, the others have binding early decision programs. Dartmouth ED acceptance rate was 25% whereas regular decision was 4%, overall 6%. Average early decision acceptance for Ivy National Universities was 19.3% for Fall 21, non Ivy that offer ED was 38.3%. Ivy schools want what they don’t already have. First gen, gender balanced classes within majors.

The average acceptance rate among the 7 Ivy leave colleges that provided verified admissions data for Fall 21 was about 5.7%

The average acceptance rate across all other national universities was about 57.5% for the same time period.
