Ms. Krachun’s 5th grade ELA will finish  Unit 3: Craft and Structure in Informational Texts. In Lesson 14, you will learn to analyze accounts of the same topic. You will focus on comparing the different points of view each text represents. We will also continue figurative language, spelling, vocabulary, and grammar. This is the LAST lesson of Unit 3.

Vocabulary


1. Commanding - adj. having the ability to attract attention.

2. Doctrine- n. an official government policy.

3. Commerce- n. the act of buying and selling goods and services.

4. Promenade- n. a walk in a public place.

5. Punctually- adv. On time.

6. Melancholy- adj. very sad.

7. Solemn- adj. very serious or formal.

8. Dictate- v. to say something for someone to write down.


Academic Vocabulary

1. Account- a written or spoken report of an event or topic.

2. Analyze- to closely and carefully examine a piece of text.

3. Point of View (informational text)- the author’s viewpoint that allows the readers

to know how the author think and feels about the topic.

4. Firsthand account- something written about an event by a person who witnessed

the event or who took part in it.

5. Secondhand account- something written about an event by a person who did NOT

experience it but rather heard or read about the event.

3.    Detain- v. Keep someone from proceeding; hold back.

5.    Exhibit- n. A public display of art or items of interest. 

6.    Exhibition- n. an exhibiting, showing, or presenting to view.

7.    Exhibitor-n. an individual or company that shows films, especially the manager or owner of a cinema

8.    Habit- n. A settled or regular tendency or practice, especially something that is hard to give up. 

9.    Habitat- n. Natural home or environment of an animal, plant, or organism.

10. Inhibit- v. Hinder, restrain, or prevent

11.  Maintain- v. cause or enable to continue. 

12. Obtain- v. get, acquire, or secure. 

13. Prohibit- v. formally forbid (something) by law, rule, or other authority.

14. Retain- v. continue to have something; keep possession of.

15. Sustain- v. strengthen or support physically or mentally.
