Our first year was a steep learning curve, and we learned a lot about the competition during this design cycle. We finished 15th in the class 2 (concept class) competiton, and finished 2nd in the design event!
During this year I learned how to use Creo 4.0 to design parts and create technical drawings. I also learned a lot about working as a design team with other people interdependently.
Our second year was a massive year for the team, we recruited some new talent on to the team and revised our design philosophy of the vehicle.
This year we focussed on 'engineering' a car, rather than 'designing' a car; and our working methods needed to change to reflect that. In my section, the 'Chassis Dossier' was a critical document that I created, and it enabled me to quickly and efficiently evaluate different iterations of the chassis.
This year I was responsible for the recruitment of new mechanical members onto the team, and the training of these members. This was a great learning experience for me, and I learned a lot regarding people management and presentation skills in this period.
In this season we competed in the class 2 competiton, finishing:
3rd in Design (110/160 points)
1st in Cost & Manufacture (135/150 points)
1st in Business (62.62/75 points)
Totalling 307.62, and meaning that we won the class 2 competiton, by a margin of over 30 points!
This year I had a strong focus on the broader system of the car, and performed a lot of research into vehicle dynamics to better understand the effect of our design decisions. I created the 'vehicle dynamics dossier' and my judge remarked that "this isn't that far removed from an industry tool"
In the virtual competition this year, we finished:
18th in Design (100/160 points)
1st in Cost & Manufacture (120/120 points)
1st in Business (120/120 points)
Totalling 340 points and finishing us 3rd place in the competition overall!
We were the top scoring EV team at the competiton, and the only team to score 100 points in every event!
This season was a year in which I really pushed myself, since I took on the role of Lead Designer whilst working full time at JCB on my placement. I would work from 8am to 5pm at JCB, and following this in the evenings, I would work on Formula Student.
In this year, we ascended to class 1, however due to COVID we were unable to build the vehicle. It is also worth noting that I was the only student working on the mechanical systems of the vehicle during this period.
My role included designing most mechanical systems of the vehicle, including chassis, suspension, driver environment and vehicle dynamics.
For the 2021 season I was the team leader and we worked hard to expand the team and train new members in an entirely online environment due to covid restrictions.
We finished 5th overall in the concept class competition, finishing:
3rd in Design (120/160)
11th in Cost & Manufacturing (103/120)
13th in Business (85.58/120)
This year was a really good learning experience for me, where I learned a lot about how to motivate a team of people that haven't even met each other in person before, and I also learned a lot about myself.
The team implemented my own engineering process in order to ensure all components were fully justified and had appropriate targets and sign-off criteria assigned to them.
Overall the year enabled me to gain some valuable skills associated with project managent and people management and pushed my understanding of the cost and business aspects of the competition to another level.
