My name is Josh Wright and I have always been obsessed with the question "Why?". I love to break issues down to their fundamental principles and build up a logical and elegant solution that considers all facets of the problem.
I graduated with distinciton from my MEng in Mechanical Engineering in July 2021, having completed a foundation year and placement year.
During this time, I made it my challenge to push myself to learn as much as possible about engineering, and this was facilitated through my experiences in both my placement year at JCB, and my experience with the new Formula Student team 'UPRacing Electric'.
I'm currently studying towards my PhD, looking into producing functional surfaces to be created using metal additive manufacturing.
I was fortunate enough to be selected to complete an undergraduate placement year with JCB from September 2019 to August 2020. This was a rotational scheme and I spent this time in two different business units within the company:
JCB Cab Systems - Sept 2019 to Feb 2020 - Design Engineering:
Took on a full workload to become a valued memeber of the team, creating and revising parts and drawings. I communicated with other teams like purchasing to ensure that my revisions were cost neutral or saving, and visited suppliers to ensure that I was selecting approprite manufacturing methods. Also spent time on shop floor and with manufacturing engineering to gain a broader understanding of operations.
JCB Structures - Feb 2020 to Aug 2020 - Structural Engineering:
Spent several weeks working on the structural testing floor, designing rigs and fixtures using Siemens NX, and using Ansys to simulate load cases to ensure they were fit for service. Worked in the strain gauge lab, and in the structures office to see the broader scope of the role of structural testing in a product's life cycle.
Also completed a feasibility study that encompassed material properties, economic and environmental impacts; and gave an oppertunity to present my findings.
In November 2017, I became one of the founding members of the UPRacing Electric formula student team; and with the other 5 people we went on to win the concept class competition in 2019, and finish as the top EV team at the UK virtual event in 2020.
This experience has not only taught me alot about engineering, but also enabled me to gain some of the softer skills that can't be taught in a classroom, such as interpersonal and presentation skills.
