Sing it with me..."Word, word, word..what is the word?!?" Watch the video clip and see if you can guess WHAT WORD Mrs. Schuster is acting out (hint hint) before I tell you!

Don't mind the messy toys behind me in the video! :)

Spoiler Alert.....

Verbs! A verb is an action word we use to give life and movement to stories. I gave you an assignment in the video. It was to write down three ways to move you body and do them. You can also play charades with a family member. You show an action and they guess it. Use the words in a sentence!

Bonus Story: Read the story and write down what the verbs that are in it. Send them to me! Over the weekend, Evan was practicing his karate for his mom and dad. Evan showed them his side stance, front lunge, and snap kick. When he finished, they went for a walk around the block. They saw a tiger and ran across the street! Evan yelled, "Let's go home!" They did. The end!

Can you pick out some of the verbs in the story? Write them in a sentence for a challenge!

Also, don't forget to check out our Verb Activity, located on our updated First Grade Brain Booster document!

(Fill in the Blank) Friday, March 27, 2020

Practicing your sight words is an excellent way to keep them fresh in your mind and easy for recall. We've learned many in first grade thus far. The following cloze, or Fill in the Blank, activity is something we've done many times! Use the 6 words below to successfully complete each sentence. You can create your own Fill in the Blank sentences for a family member to answer! Be the teacher! Send me your answers!

If you had a chance to look at and play "Hopscotch Phonics", you're ready for today's treat! We've learned so many phonics digraphs so far, and more to come. Brandon and I found a good book for review! Enjoy...I miss you all!

Digraph ea.MOV

Read Aloud Thoughts

  1. What is the spelling word I read?

  2. What word in the title has the long e sound?

  3. Did you go on your scavenger hunt? If so, email me!

It was beautiful outside today...so we took learning outside! Today was all about phonics. I reviewed the digraphs and trigraphs that Brandon has learned so far with hopscotch! This is how we played....

  • Make a hopscotch game/grid outside.

  • Use phonics skills we've learned so far: a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e, u-e, ng, sh, th, oo, ck, ch, ai, ay, ee, ea (long e and short e), ie, tch, dge. You can also use letters (vowels and consonants).

  • Have your child walk through the hopscotch grid and say each skill and their corresponding sounds.

  • Find something to toss (i.e. a rock, stuffed animal...we used a bEAn bag). Toss the item into the grid.

  • Hop to the square the item landed on. Your child has to identify and say the skill, its sound and use it in a sentence.

  • Hop to the end and repeat as many times as you'd like!

Bonus Story: Franceska and Adelie were baking cupcakes at Zoey's house. The girls wanted to make white cupcakes with blue icing. These were for Jared's 7th birthday. When they were done, they had 18 white and blue cupcakes. But...Cheddar ate THREE! How many cupcakes are left?

    1. Which words have suffixes?

    2. Write a subtraction sentence to match the story above. Solve it!

Math Monday, March 23, 2020

We have spend a LOT of time in first grade learning different way to add and subtract. Can you remember any of our strategies we've learned? (Hint: There are at least 4!) If you can remember any of them, tell me what they are! :) Here's a fun math game Brandon and I played today to brush up on our addition skills! This will become a regular in our house. Let me know how you like it!

Addition War!

Materials Needed

  • Deck of Playing Cards (We take out the Kings and Queens)

    • We take out the Kings and Queens

    • Jacks equal 10 and Aces equal 1(Challenge: Aces equal 11)

  • Paper and a pencil to show your work (optional).

How to Play

Deal all cards out into 2 piles. Both players turn the top 2 cards over and add them. You must each state your addition sentence, for example, " 3 plus 10 equals 13". The player with the higher sum keeps both sets of cards. If there is a tie, where the addition sentence has the same sum, you're in a War! Two more cards are flipped and added. Again, the player with the higher sum keeps all the cards. Play until one player has all cards OR whoever has the most cards..."wins"! Remember, it's just for fun!

All Things Spring...

Yesterday, March 19, 2020, was the first day of SPRING. If we would have been together we would have read the very silly story, "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Frog". Click the image below to see a read aloud!

Before you read discuss these questions and ideas:

  • What are some things we see in spring?

  • Do you think we could really swallow a frog?

  • What is your favorite thing to do in spring?

Journal Writing:

  • When you've finished watching the story and taking a peek at the Mobi Movie from Brain Pop Jr. Write about it! Use this journal prompt and complete the sentences, "I love spring. In spring I can see ___________. I can hear ___________. I love to __________. I love spring!"

Spelling Practice - Pictionary Style!

Practicing current and old spelling words is an excellent way to keep phonics skills and rules fresh in our memory. One of our favorite ways to do this is by playing Pictionary! If you've kept our old reading newsletters, pick one. If you don't have them, you can access our old lists and skills here: Wonders Spelling Lists .

How to Play:

  • Gather materials - spelling list, materials to draw on and write on, imagination :)

  • Display word list being used.

  • The "teacher" will pick one word secretly and draw it for the "student".

  • When the student figures out what the word is, they'll write it/copy it on a piece of paper or marker board. Have them sing our "Word, word, word...what is the word?!?" song to you! :)

  • Have your child spell it and use it in a sentence (orally) correctly.

  • Repeat until they've all been reviewed.

Practicing current and old spelling words is an excellent way to keep phonics skills fresh in our minds.
