FAQ:
What's a makerspace and why do we have one?
A makerspace is a place to create and engage in hands on exploration. Research supports that the part of your brain you use in creative play is directly related to the part of your brain necessary for reading comprehension. At Summit, we include a makerspace in our Media Center to encourage students to develop this crucial part of their brain.
How many books can a student borrow?
Students and staff are not limited to a specific number of books. The general rule of thumb is "your grade + 1" so a grade 2 student would get 3 books.
Why don't I get overdue notices?
Students are allowed to keep a book checked out until they are done with them. The only time a book is considered "overdue" is at the very end of the school year. If you would like to know what books are checked out, I'm happy to provide that information at any time.
Are you charging us fines for lost or damaged books?
Lost and damaged books are part of the cost of doing business. Accidents happen. The only time a fine will be charged is if the loss or damage is determined to be malicious.
Why did my kindergartener bring home a chapter book?
It is the goal of the Summit Media Center to provide unfettered access to quality resources. I will not limit student check out by lexile level or perceived reading ability.
I don't think this book belongs in an elementary school, what can I do about that?
I'm sorry that you found a book that you do not appreciate. All books in our collection have received positive reviews from a reliable source. I'm happy to discuss with you any book which you find problematic and we do have official channels to challenge a book's inclusion in the library if that becomes necessary. Please begin this conversation with the librarian; I'm available by phone, email, or in person.
Can I recommend titles that I think the library should have?
Yes. Recommendations are welcome, but I do not guarantee that the library will ultimately purchase the title. All books in the collection are carefully selected and considered against a handful of criteria.
Do you accept donations?
Yes. Donations are appreciated, but not all donated books will become part of the library collection. Donations that do not get added to the library will be used as prizes or distributed to Little Free Libraries in our community.
Can I volunteer?
Yes. I always need help shelving and repairing books. Volunteers are also appreciated during Kindergarten and First Grade library to function as small group readers and to help with book selection. Contact me for specific times and duties.
