They are public institutions that offer higher education for high school graduates. They offer two-year programs that allow students to earn enough credit to transfer to a 4 year institutions, like public or private universities. With 2-years you can get an associate's degree or you can finish your 4+ years there and obtain a bachelor's degree if offered.
Community Colleges offer a variety of programs. The programs can go from Engineering, Economics, Political Science, History, to English, and Visual arts. Another type of programs they offer are automobile mechanical work, dental assistant, and culinary arts, to name a few.
During this time you can explore your interests and choose the best one that fits you.
California offers 2 years free of community college under the CA Promise incentive. You should also include your community colleges to your FAFSA application, to obtain extra help for books, etc.
There are 123 community colleges in all California. In Los Angeles are there are nine CCs and they form the Los Angeles Community College District. One of their colleges is ELAC which is also the closest and most popular one in our area.
When choosing a community college you should take in consideration if they offer what you want to study and even your commuting time. Keep in mind most community colleges don't offer housing.

To be eligible to apply to CCs you will need to finish high school or an equivalent program. For the application you will need your personal information and your parent(s) information.
Letters of recommendation, GPA, and extracurriculars are not needed.
